The Taxi Driver Who Adopted Me for a Day: A Story of Jordanian Hospitality

When people ask me about Jordan, they usually expect stories about Petra, Wadi Rum, or the Dead Sea.

Instead, I tell them about a taxi driver.

Out of all the incredible places I visited, one of my strongest memories isn’t a famous landmark or breathtaking landscape. It’s a simple taxi ride on my final day in the country that perfectly captured the hospitality Jordan is known for.

An Unexpected Travel Companion

It was my last day in Jordan.

The night before, I had been on a date and was feeling the consequences. Hungover, tired, and running on very little energy, I had arranged for a taxi to take me from Amman to the Israeli border, where I planned to continue towards Jerusalem.

Before leaving, however, I had one final mission: getting a tattoo.

I assumed the plan would be simple. Pick me up, drive me to the tattoo studio, and then continue to the border.

Easy.

My driver had other plans.

The moment he saw me, he seemed to take personal responsibility for my wellbeing. On the way, he suddenly pulled over at a roadside stand and returned with food and drinks.

“You need this,” he insisted.

I wasn’t going to argue.

Things became even funnier when it was time to find the tattoo studio. Although the artist had sent me an address, my driver took my phone, called him directly, exchanged a rapid conversation in Arabic, and confidently declared:

“I know where we go.”

I had no idea what had just happened, but somehow I trusted him.

The World's Most Invested Taxi Driver

When we arrived at the tattoo studio, I assumed our interaction was temporarily over.

Not quite.

The studio was located on the second floor of a building, and my driver insisted on accompanying me upstairs. Suddenly, it felt less like I had hired a taxi and more like I had gained a very protective uncle.

While discussing the design, he remained nearby, observing the entire process with genuine interest.

Then came a moment I’ll never forget.

As the tattoo artist finished his work, both men leaned over to inspect the result. The artist carefully examined his craftsmanship, while my taxi driver proudly gave an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

As if he had personally contributed to the tattoo himself.

To this day, that image still makes me laugh.

Before leaving, the artist instructed us to stop at a pharmacy to buy healing ointment. My driver turned this into a military operation, dropping me off in front of the pharmacy while he circled the block searching for parking.

“Go! Fast!”

Mission accomplished.

Looking After Me Until the End

An hour later, I had already forgotten the tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions.

My driver hadn’t.

Without warning, he reminded me that I needed to apply the ointment. In fact, he seemed so concerned about it that I genuinely thought he might apply it himself if I didn’t act quickly enough.

I eventually compromised by applying it myself while he supervised and held the tube.

The rest of the journey continued in much the same way.

More water.

More dates.

More questions about whether I was doing okay.

By the time we reached the border, it felt strange to say goodbye.

We took a selfie together, I thanked him, left a tip, and we went our separate ways.

Conclusion

Jordan is full of famous sights.

The landscapes are beautiful. The history is incredible. Petra and Wadi Rum deserve every bit of their reputation.

But what I remember most is the kindness of its people.

Not because the driver had to help me.

Not because he expected anything in return.

But because a complete stranger decided that, for one day, my wellbeing was his responsibility.

If you’re considering visiting Jordan, go for the scenery and the history.

But don’t be surprised if it’s the hospitality that stays with you long after you’ve left.
